Five Years From Now by Paige Toon was a very moving read. When I picked this up I thought the name Paige Toon seemed familiar but I’ve never read any of her books before. Then I realised her very first book Lucy in the Sky was just about to be released as I was leaving my first publishing job at Simon & Schuster Australia to head over to the UK to live and work.

It seems fitting that Five Years From Now is about the relationship between two people – Nell and Van – who first meet as kids and every five years brings them back together, even though Van lives in Australia and Nell lives in Cornwall. It took over ten years for me to rediscover Paige Toon and so much has happened in my life during that time.

A character in the book says “One day, maybe five years from now, you’ll look back and understand why this happened…” and that’s really the heart of this book.

Nell and Van reconnect throughout life. First they meet as five-year-olds when their parents start dating. Then they live as brother and sister until a tragedy when they are ten forces them apart to other sides of the world. They meet again at 15, 20, 25, 30 etc. But life, geographical distance and circumstances keep making it tough for them to be together.

This book is so bittersweet as it tells the story of Nell and Van’s relationship and their family and friends. It reminded me of the book One Day by David Nicholls which checks in on the two protagonists on the same day every year for twenty years. Five Years From Now shows how people can change overtime and how in some respects they don’t change at all. Despite what you want in life, sometimes life has other plans. There’s so much we don’t have control over.

I really loved this book and want to read more books by Paige Toon in the future. It only took over ten years to get to this one…

Verdict: Read this if you want a book that will tug on your heartstrings.

Oooh, this really evokes a Marian Keyes or a Cecelia Ahern in my mind – I haven’t read anything like that for aaaaages. It sounds like it would be a great Valentine’s Day read!!

Yes it’s a good book but not as light hearted as Marian or Cecelia. And not really a romance.
