20 Bookish Problems That All Bookworms Understand

bookworm problem mismatched books
When your book series is not the same size

I’m always talking about how much I love books. But like everyone else, sometimes I get annoyed by the little things. These bookish problems are certainly not the end of the world but some days they can make me go aargh!

Today in the spirit of getting them off my chest, I’m listing my bookish pet peeves.  So here they are in no particular order:

1. When your follower count on bookstagram is about to reach a milestone like 1999 and you wake up to 1993. The number then continues this up and down motion for days or weeks.

2. When you can’t give half stars on Goodreads. (It’s so frustrating! Sometimes a book is better than a three but not as good as a four.)

3. When a book series won’t fit perfectly on one shelf and spreads over onto another shelf. (It’s so petty but it really bugs me. )

4. When you buy a book in a series online and when the book arrives it’s a different size to the other books in the series. (Pictured are just a few series I own which are different sizes. Sometimes I come to a series late and can only find mismatched books.)

5. When a book is going really well and you’re loving it and then the ending is hurried or is the equivalent of “it was just a dream.” Then the whole book is spoiled for you.

6. When retailers and/or publishers add stickers on books that you can’t get off without damaging the book. (I hate that all my penguin clothbound editions have damage on the back from me removing the barcode stickers. Whose idea was that?)

7. When on the rare occasion you lend someone a book and they hand it back with a cracked spine or with some other damage. No!!! Or worse, you never get it back. (I still think of the books I’ve lost in this way over the years.)

8. When someone spoils a new release book before you’ve read it and didn’t have a spoiler warning at the top of their post. (To be honest, it’s probably my bad for clicking on it in the first place.)

9. When you post a photo you really love on bookstagram and it doesn’t get many likes and you wonder is it the algorithm or is my photo crappy? ( This happens to me all the time and then I chill and remember the reason I joined bookstagram was for the books and talking about books and not to obsess about likes and followers.)

10. When a book has so much hype around it and everyone seems to love it but you read it and don’t. You then wonder what all the fuss was about.

11. When there’s an author you love (ahem Diana Gabaldon) but you have to wait years for the next book in a series. By the time it arrives, you’ve forgotten what you read in the book before it but don’t feel like going back and rereading a whole massive book to find out.

12. When you arrive late to collecting a series of books and you can’t find one of the books in the series anywhere and it’s now out of print.

13. When the movie or TV series based on a favourite book is terrible. Of course it’s not going to be exactly the same, but why did they get rid of a beloved character, change half the plot and hire an actor who looks nothing like the character is described in the book?

14. When you want to keep reading but you have to get up early for work so you have to stop. (I still remember the good old days when I could stay up until 1am reading.)

15. When you keep downloading free books on your kindle and you’ll never be able to read them all, but you can’t stop because they are FREE!

16. When you have to stop reading during an amazing part in your book because the real world wants your attention. (My dogs always jump on me for attention just when I’m reading a good part. To be honest, it’s usually because it’s their dinner time.)

17. When someone asks what your favourite book is and you have to pick just one.

18. When you run out of room on your bookshelf which means you have to get rid of some books!

19. When you’re at a party and you introduce the topic of books and someone says they don’t read and looks at you like you’re crazy because you do.

20. When you have 50+ unread books on your to be read pile but feel like you have nothing to read. (This is the story of my life.)

What are your bookish pet peeves? Let’s have a whinge today and go back to being positive tomorrow.

I am so with you on the half-star ratings!! Ugh!! We need those on Goodreads! I tend to round up which annoys me because that means the ratings aren’t equal. My 4 star reads aren’t all 4 stars. Some actually are 3.5 and so on. Bah! Annoying!!!

I think that surely Goodreads can fix it so that we can give half stars. I feel that 3.5 stars would be my default score. Thanks for stopping by!

Half star ratings on Goodreads arghhhhh
Books with mind numbing hype which I read and found disappointing. I tend to stay away from over hyped books but because of the blog, I don’t have as much choice as I did in the past.
I have over 60 unread books and still complain about not having what to read. Again, because of the blog, I need to read something which can be reviewed so…

It sounds like we have a lot of bookworm problems in common 😂.

Having to stop reading so I can go to sleep early is the story of my life! I have to wake up and get ready for work at 6am so my college days of reading till 3am to finish a book are over, it is so sad. 🤣😭

Half star ratings! Come on Goodreads!!! I have to always think too hard about whether I want to give it a 3 or 4 then write “3.5.”

Yes! I don’t understand why they can’t change their rating system so you can give a half star.

NUMBER 6, SERIOUSLY! I don’t get why retailers do that. They know about bookstagram by now, they must know someone will take a photo with the books! Also libraries really need to stop it too. My local one puts their barcode on the front… so annoying. Why can’t they put in on the inside of the front or back cover??? I give, lol, but thank you for allowing the rant!

I think libraries are slow to catch onto bookstagram and people wanting to take clean shots of books. I know I didn’t have an issue with this until last year when I joined bookstagram. I used to work in a bookstore and we used tea tree oil to get stickers neatly off books but with books like my clothbounds the oil would damage them further.

You can also try rubbing over it vigorously with your hand as this warms up the glue and makes the sticker easier to peel off.

I can totally relate to your list. My add is libraries that place identifying stickers over the book’s bar code sticker making it impossible to scan it.

Omg I so agree with this list. I also get bugged about stickers on my books. The worst is the sale price sticker on the front! Like why would you want to mar the cover?! I don’t mind the back so much but the front?! Ugh!

I know! I think the retailers are just thinking about getting that sale and not the person buying the book. Usually if you rub over a sticker with your hand first that helps to peel it off. Or use tea tree oil if it’s just an ordinary paperback. But some stickers are really tough to get off because they use the wrong type of glue when they put the stickers on my machine at the printer (I know this from my bookstore/book publishing jobs.)

I can relate with all of these haha 🙂 It’s the *worst* when the sequel to an amazing book comes out many months or years later. Especially when the last book ended on a cliffhanger! Also, I’m a mood reader so I keep leaving books half-finished and starting new ones! It’s a real problem.

I’m the same as you! I’m a mood reader as well and always start and stop books.

I’ve done this so much I can’t even keep track of all the books I’ve semi-DNF’d for no reason. The worst part is when I’ve read more than half a book, but then I leave it and return to it a few months later and have to reread the whole book. Not that that is necessarily a bad thing 😉

I feel for you on the Instagram number! The same think is happening to me on Twitter. Lol. You bring up so many great points! I do wish Goodreads and Amazon would let you do half stars. I always round up, do you?
Free books are my downfall, LOL.

Oh no sorry to hear that about your Twitter numbers. One of the joys of social media! 😂 When it comes to goodreads scores I usually stick to a 3 instead of rounding up or down.

I totally agree with a lot of these! I just started my blog so none of my posts get a lot of attention, but that’s fine. 🤷🏽‍♀️ if no one reads my reviews I’m still happy I’ve written them.
Definitely stopped loaning out books when someone returned a book to me and the cover was ruined and the pages were all wrinkled. 😖 I learned my lesson, all my books stay safe with me. And the stickers?? ugh, SO annoying!

#5 is my favorite point, I’ve read so many books with shoddy endings I just have to wonder if the author got tired of reading so they just threw something together. definitely heartbreaking when you make your way to the end of a book and the last few pages suck. 💔

Re: #13, HBO’s Game of Thrones is a fantastic adaptation (in my opinion), but I *love* how the costumers/make up artists have just given up on trying to make him blonde, as his character is supposed to be 😂😂😂 look at a still of him from the pilot, and compare it to the most recent season – his hair has just given up on trying to be “golden”, it’s hilarious!

And re: #18 – I am shocked!!! You mean it’s not just time to get more bookshelves or start new piles in the hallway/bedroom/kitchen? 😜

#15! My kindle is FULL. I often listen to audiobooks, so I would add bad narration.Or if they change narrators in a series.
